failed to connect to IDE run session notification endpoint, retrying... {"error": "tls: failed to verify certificate: x509: certificate has expired or is not yet valid: current time XYZ is after XYZ "} #6207

Is there an existing issue for this?

Describe the bug

Starting an aspire project (that worked just two days ago) now fails with:

failed to connect to IDE run session notification endpoint, retrying...   {"error": "tls: failed to verify certificate: x509: certificate has expired or is not yet valid: current time 2024-10-09T14:21:17+02:00 is after 2024-10-08T09:30:21Z"}

No indication what cert might be expire and/or untrusted.

PS C:\Users\petrhouska> dotnet dev-certs https
A valid HTTPS certificate is already present.
PS C:\Users\petrhouska> dotnet dev-certs https --trust
Trusting the HTTPS development certificate was requested. A confirmation prompt will be displayed if the certificate was not previously trusted. Click yes on the prompt to trust the certificate.
Successfully trusted the existing HTTPS certificate.

Doesn't solve the problem.

Works for my co-workers so I assume it must be some local problem, but since I don't know what cert the culprit is it's hard to solve it.

Expected Behavior

Aspire project starts.

fixed the problem

But I'd argue better error message would be beneficial. The VS version wasn't even old enough to be disallowed by MSFT policies.

kwaazaar commented 4 weeks ago

Updating VS worked for me 2 weeks ago, but today it's back :-(

fail: Aspire.Hosting.Dcp.dcpctrl.IdeExecutableRunner[0] failed to connect to IDE run session notification endpoint, retrying... {"error": "tls: failed to verify certificate: x509: certificate has expired or is not yet valid: current time 2024-10-25T15:39:31+02:00 is after 2024-10-25T13:18:25Z"}

If you like frustration, try Aspire... my experience so far, sadly.

davidfowl commented 4 weeks ago

@karolz-ms can you work with @vijayrkn and @tlmii to resolve this one in the future version of the tools?

karolz-ms commented 4 weeks ago

@kwaazaar if you restart VS, does the problem disappear?

davidfowl commented 3 weeks ago

We neeed to extend whatever timeout we have. People leave open their tools for days (especially with devbox).

kwaazaar commented 3 weeks ago

@kwaazaar if you restart VS, does the problem disappear?

Yes it did @karolz-ms .Thanks!

My VS had probably been open for weeks, as I'm working on a big new feature. I don't care so much if I have to restart, but the error doesn't tell me to, so it didnt cross my mind.

karolz-ms commented 3 weeks ago

@kwaazaar thank you.

@tlmii we should periodically refresh the cert that is given to DCP for securing the connection to the IDE. https://github.com/dotnet/aspire/blob/main/docs/specs/IDE-execution.md#enabling-ide-execution As David said above, the IDE may be left open for a while (days or even weeks).
