Team visibility #11

One of the hard parts of working remotely is that you might feel isolated. PukkaTeam is a potential way of feeling more integrated by showing pictures of the team members on a regular interval.

This might negate the feeling of isolation.

Do note that this app is just an example. I don't really like the app itself overall, but I do like the idea of seeing all the team members displayed on an external screen for example.

Any thoughts?

@jruts great question! (as always!) ❓ Yes, we agree that the feeling of isolation is one of the difficult challenges to solve in a remote-first-working-culture And we don't (yet) have "the answer(s)" ... #HelpWanted

I ❤️ the idea of having a presence and opt-in video-chat for virtual socialising. Our plan is to have a presence feature baked into the core of the DWYL App.

PukkaTeam looks really promising (thanks for reminding us of it!) ... My issue with using a service like PukkaTeam is that while the website looks great (very inviting) and they appear to have a few useful/desirable features, their "FAQ" leaves much to be desired in terms of how they are processing and storing data ... FAQs_PukkaTeam.pdf (Snapshot)

The copyright at the bottom of the PukkaTeam page is isev Limited ... http://www.isev.co.uk pukkateam-copyright-isev-ltd they have a nice website, but when we observe their GitHub: https://github.com/isevltd I get no insight as to how they are building the tech ... (I'm weary of services which both close source and lock up my data) 🤔

I consider my biometrics (face/voice) to be pretty "sensitive" data, if I ever decided to use voice/facial recognition to secure my house in the future I don't want a mountain of data on some random (probably insecure) server that some "bad" person can use to crack my life... 😕

Yes, I'm Paranoid about sharing my personal (biometric) data! (I think everyone should be...!)

Note: while I use Skype (to talk to family/friends) and Google Hangouts for work, I would drop both of them in a heartbeat for something more security-focussed where my data is not being mined and sold to advertisers.

For example I would investigate using WebRTC (e.g: https://talky.io ) for peer-to-peer presence and video chat. Combined with decent remote-working hardware we can MVP the solution quite easily.

@eliascodes is ("deep") learning how to use WebRTC and might be able to help us with this... 😉

If an organisation also has a physical office (like we currently do), it's also worth considering having an ongoing feed (which can be muted!) of the office that people can interact with.

 that you raised this @jruts !

one specific feature I'd like to have (as a developer) is Auto-open Google Hangout at a set time 📆 to avoid having to remember to open a browser copy-paste a link and click Join ...
