the map files come from a project of @pissang. Here is the issue I raised: https://github.com/pissang/starbucks/issues/2. I am not sure a license file in this project would help.
to be on the safe side, would your company use the map files from Natural Earth? I think they have clearer license terms. Here is the tutorial on how to make on your own: https://echarts-maps.github.io/echarts-geomapping-book-en/howtos/switzerland/
@jechague, I have clarified the source for this project. @pissang confirmed that those country maps originated from OSM. Hence, I will proceed to put a license file and a disclaimer in.
Great news!
Do you want me to help with a pull request?
Surely you can help with it. OSM had this guidance for derived maps from Open Street Map: https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright
And Switzerland map is derived from Natural Earth: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/.
and I will add one more note: we are not and will not be responsible for the inaccuracies in country borders, as we are simply a small group of map enthusiasts with good intention. We are happy that github users find them useful in your purpose. We will accept PR for border corrections as well as other map contributions but we are not prepared to take the political/moral blames.
I opened PR #30 adding a license file to the repo.
Regarding your comments about not wanting to provide any warranty about inaccuracies and similar issues with the data, the ODbL-1.0 License explicitly state this:
7.1 The Database is licensed by the Licensor "as is" and without any warranty of any kind, either express, implied, or arising by statute, custom, course of dealing, or trade usage. Licensor specifically disclaims any and all implied warranties or conditions of title, non-infringement, accuracy or completeness, the presence or absence of errors, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, or otherwise.
Note that since the Natural Earth data is part of the public domain, it can be relicensed by the same license as the OSM data.
ping @chfw or @chenjiandongx: could you take a look at PR #30?
Thanks
@chenjiandongx Thanks!
Best Regards!
Hi,
We @genexuslabs are considering using the information in this repository in one of our products and we would like a clarification of the license for using it.
We understand by this section of the repo's ReadMe that your intention is to make the information as open as possible, is that correct? If this is the case, may we suggest the inclusion of a license file^1 in the repository to clearly state this? We would be happy to make a PR if needed.
We think that the open source license that most closely aligns with the intention of said section is this one or you could choose another one from this helpful list.
Best regards, José
