Choices #17

@ecn310/development Your project team was unable to submit a draft data and results section last weekend, and unable to present results in class today. Successfully completing the project will require remedial action. In my view, in order to complete a high-quality project, you should aim to

  1. submit a draft data and results section (that was due last week) by Wednesday, Nov. 27;
  2. take my feedback on that draft (which I can deliver on Friday, Nov. 29 at the latest) to make improvements and present in class on Tuesday, Dec. 3 (in place of today's presentation).

I know that everyone has their own plans and priorities, especially over the long break. I will therefore execute the following plan that respects individual choice:

  1. The team can decide now to split into two teams (this could be teams of two people or one team of three and an individual): those who want to complete the work outlined above over break, and those who prefer to re-start work on the project after the break. I will make a copy of the repo, and each "new" team will have an exact copy of what exists now and will diverge from there to complete separate projects.
  2. The part of the team that wants to work over break will formulate a detailed work plan that assigns deliverables to each member in a way that is explicitly agreed to by all members of the team. The team will record the details and deliverables of all work done on this Github repo so that I am kept current on all developments. Any member who does not complete their assigned tasks by the given deadlines will be split off into a separate team (potentially joining anyone who has already split off).

Note that I have a fixed amount of time to assist and provide feedback; I devote a lot of time to this, but my time is not infinite. If I am running up against time constraints, I will provide support and feedback on a first come, first served basis. I have a LOT more time over Thanksgiving break than what I will have once break is over.

Please reply here with your decisions and plans. I will interpret a non-reply by noon tomorrow (Friday) as indicating a choice to postpone work until after break.

@ecn310/development I'm checking in because it seemed to me yesterday that @spsotelo planned to work over Thanksgiving. Can someone bring me up to speed on what's going on here?

Also, the work plan I was thinking of was the work over the break that it would take to deliver the data and results section, and then the presentation.

@ecn310/development I would advise focusing on getting the analysis done and the data/results sections written (there's no use finalizing lit review, intro, etc. until you've gotten feedback on the results).

I also don't understand where you list the results and analysis sections; these are the same thing, aren't they? Analysis is the work that we do, and we title the section of the report where we present the results of the analysis "Results."

I don't understand clearly when you'd be ready for my feedback on the data/results. That has to be top priority, and as soon as possible so there is time to iterate on the results before you present in class on 12/3 (one week from today!).

Yes, someone should make the replication plan; but NOT at the expense of getting the analysis done and written up into the results section.

I think the entries toward the bottom that start with 11 for the date should be 12.

I'm not sure how to give you feedback on data.tex at this point that makes sense. data.tex was prep work for the data section (and maybe some of the results section) in the actual report. A lot of it will go into the replication package, and only the key parts into the report. Wouldn't you rather have feedback on the actual report write up?

I think there has been a misunderstanding as the group thought we were supposed to hand in the overleaf for the write-up, and then the replication package could be made once the overleaf was completed. There is confusion about what the "actual report" is. So, it is the replication package that you will look into?

@ecn310/development I will look at two things: the report (someone renamed the template as "Developement_report.tex as instructed; although the instructions were actually to leave the original template in place and make a copy so you could refer back to it if you needed, but this is not a big deal for me) and the replication package.

See slides 12 and 13 from Nov. 14 slide deck about what the assignment was for that first (partial--just the data and results sections) submission of the report due Nov. 15.

Meiska12 commented 3 months ago

Hello Team, and @kbuzard

After much deliberation about the group's progress and the work that has been distributed amongst us, we believe that it would be reasonable to create a grade differentiator between Filo and the other members. The work, time, and effort do not seem to be on the same page as the rest of us. It seems unfair if we all received the same grade.

This is also based on the need for more commitment to work on assignments in due time and only clarifying at the last minute when other members had to take up their responsibilities. Hence, as Professor Buzard suggested, at this stage of time, you can separate from the group or get a letter grade lower than Lucia, Sergio, and myself (Megha).

Yes, on that .tex the sections are Lit Review, Theory, Data, Results, and Discussion. All five, apart from Intro and conclusion.

@ecn310/development I have a busy morning and early afternoon tomorrow, but I will try to get you comprehensive feedback by early evening. I took a very quick look for low-hanging fruit, and this is what I saw:

kbuzard commented 3 months ago

@ecn310/development Here are my broad comments, with more specific ones on Overleaf. Let me know (here) if you have any questions! I don't get notifications if you reply to a comment in Overleaf.

  1. Your literature review reads more like an introduction. Yes, it's citing some literature. But it's mostly telling a story about the context. The literature review should cover more papers (at least seven) and say what they have found and how what you are doing contributes to the literature (that is, does something different that wasn't known in the literature).
    • They should all be reflected in the Bibliography section.
  2. I re-entered my comments on the theory sectioin
  3. The data section is improved; it just needs to be a bit clearer and to include and discuss summary statistics (tables with means, medians, counts, etc.)
    • Somewhere in the data section, you need to state that you only analyze up through 2019 to avoid the pandemic.
  4. The results section should be written as prose, not bullet points.
    • The graphs need to be better explained--that is, that you're taking averages across all the countries in each group for each year.
    • You don't need four separate graphs for four variables. You can combine this down to two. I'd suggest putting the GDP graphs together into one and the manufacturing together. This will then show clearly that they are at different levels from each other and make this section SO much easier to read.
    • Again, all your graphs need notes that explain what is in them. See the instructions in Greenlaw.
  5. You need to tell the reader about the limitations of your data in the Data section.
