Reviewing Reddit's interface: In Reddit's recent redesign (which needs to be enabled if you're logged in), Reddit shows a "Show parent comments" button: example
Clicking it (attempts to) show all the ancestors, without showing the rest:
I'm not sure what's limiting it here; logged in, I get a full view:
Without the redesign, there's a parent button just like the current ^
button in Coauthor.
Yevhenii and Jeffrey suggest that long-pressing on the parent (^) button should bring up a menu of all ancestors (unclear what the order should be), to more clearly give context. (Yevhenii originally suggested that single click should do this, but I think that would interrupt the natural flow of clicking to get to the right height.)
An alternative would be some kind folded list of ancestors that you could unfold...? Or perhaps a more compact display of ancestors, showing all the titles in one bar? I don't think breadcrumbs will look good, but in that spirit of several titles (possibly abbreviated after certain length?) on a single line.
Relatedly, Dylan points out that Reddit shows adjustable number of ancestors of message, not just root (formerly #391).
