I need faster iteration on re-incorporating branch projects into the main line, so I'm opening a new long-running branch 'devel'. I propose that we keep this branch perpetually, and use looser criteria for adding to it. Then we can merge devel into master periodically when convenient. In keeping with the idea of looser criteria, I will merge this pull request into devel immediately.
