Entering the customizer generates "There had been a critical error etc." message on preview screen

Problem Description

1. From a page choose "Theme Customizer" from the WP menu.
2. Customizer opens with menu on LHS and functions as expected.
3. However in place of page preview on RHS I have "There has been a critical error on this website" screen
