Database Exception on install #148

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install OneSync
2. Run OneSync
3. Select C:\cygwin\home\root at the folder to sync
4. Select ...\Desktop\My Dropbox\cygwinroot as the Intermediary Storage
Location
5. Give the new job a name
6. Click Add New Job

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expected the job to be added to the list of jobs.
Instead I receive "Database exception: Please check your job name and
folder directories for selected jobs"

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

OneSync Version 2.0
Windows Vista SP2

Please provide any additional information below.

This problem is probably caused by the UAC on Vista. When OneSync is installed
on a
folder which you don't have the permission to edit files, you will get the
database
exception message.

Programs are supposed to only write data in folders like AppData, not in the
program directory (e.g. Program Files\OneSync). Vista enforces this. I strongly
recommend making OneSync write data to, e.g., AppData\OneSync, so that the
program can be installed anywhere, including the recommended Program Files
folder. (I did the same for a C++ app of mine, and it now gets along happily
with UAC :) .)

I see. I think it is our mistake to force it to do data writing in C drive
directly. We will follow your suggestion to fix this problem in our next
release.

Thank you very much for your useful suggestion. =)

OneSync was already installed in "program files (x86)" folder in W7/64. I
didn't want to install anything at the root of C: anyway. I did have the issue
mentioned here and I solved it by starting OneSync3 as admin... no database
exception error anymore.
