Loss of connectivity, MAC addess changed to : 00-00-00-00-00-00 after reset/reboot

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Happened once, and since the device is blocked from external access.
2. Reset
3. power-down/up.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
SNAKE OS installed and was correctly working for some weeks. I lost the 
connectivity and it was not possible anymore to get connected to NAS.
I did a RESET, and the device cannot be accessed from LAN by default.

All leds are woking and LAN is active

On the LAN connectivity pannel of the router, I see the following MAC adress 
and name (which was normally "Snake")

Adresse IP  Adresse MAC             Name
192.168.1.58    00-00-00-00-00-00   192.168.1.58

Is there a way to get the device running again or to access it anyway? How to 
change the MAC adresse and name to revert to a normal operating mode?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

SNAKE OS firmware for wlxkj652, snakeos-V1.3.2-20101130-from-original.bin 
running Windows XP and using a Motorola Netopia router - Modèle    3397GP

Please provide any additional information below.

Update : I can PING the NAS when assigning manually IP adress, but can't access 
the WEB interface or other services from any command line session not WEB 
browser. Did I lost firmware? How to recover?

Hi Yooba,
I have exactely the same problem.
Problems started with Transmission: the service stoppd running and it was not 
possible to have it runs again neither with 'start' nor with 'restart' button.
After a couple of days the NAS was no more accessible BUT I can ping it...
I see from Jan. nobody reply you so I think this is a hard step. I think 
something hardware has gone.
Did you maybe in the meantime solved anything?

Thank you for your quick reply.
The answer is - unfortunately - NO.
It is like all services are down...
I tried a port scan with <nmap> and the result is host is up but all ports are 
closed!
Is it possible to carry on a hard reset?

Push the reset button for a minute while the box starts up, that should reset 
the config. I'm not sure if there's much you can do if that doesn't help.

Try hooking it up to a compuiter if it's currently connected to a router.

The best way to check what's going on would be with a serial cable, but that's 
a bit involved.

Solved!
The NAS was resetted and nmap showed both web and ssh ports listening (of 
course on a different IP address gave by the router...).
Connected with the standard password and re-done all the cconfiguration.
It is running smoothly now.

Only for debugging purpose and for the community.
Problems started when I changed the location of the NAS.
At the beginning it was placed on a wooden surface but recently I changed 
location putting it on top of the router.
When I took the NAS for resetting I noticed the lower surface (the metal one) 
was hot - you can't keep fingers on it!
Now I placed a plastic separator between router and NAS and the metal surface 
is no more so hot.
Maybe heat caused (or helped) the non function of the device.

So it could have been that the better cooling fixed it and not the reset?

Reseting clears the configuration area on the flash. It seems a bit odd that 
the effects of the heat would be limited to that and not screw up the whole 
flash.

Did you ever leave the box powered off when it wasn't working?

I resetted the NAS and this enabled me to access it and reconfigure again.
I simply thought the heat could have caused the corruption of the 
configuration...
As for your last question, my box is always powered on since it is active on my 
home lan (serving some PCs) and connected to an external HD with many data on 
it.

Dear All,

In fact, I struggled a lot with this issue, and finaly, the NAS came back to 
life after several resets. I 
guess that the heat was the issue as now I putted an heat sink on it and now it 
works naked without any box. Overload, 
I think.
