Thanks for writing, and I sort of see what you mean - we don't really show how shading is getting done per pixel here.
Do you have any suggestions for what might make it clearer? I'm coming up a bit blank on how to make a better figure here (might mean an entire rewrite of the figure).
I guess I'll keep this one open, as something to consider for the next edition. Ping on any ideas to improve it.

I know the teapot comparison is clear and easy to distinguish right and wrong. But the rendering of the plane got me confused.
