Project name #12

Hi Fabrice, Since you said you would like to find a "better" name for the project I thought we could put suggestions here instead of telegram.

My suggestions are:

  1. Serval, which is a wild African cat which should be easy to stylise for a logo, eg https://www.qwant.com/?q=serval%20cartoon&t=images

  2. Anancy, spider character from African/Caribbean folklore. Spiders are to do with webs...

  3. Nervous Crow, very tenuous name derived from an anagram of Servonk and a character from the same programme as Servo

  4. Minya, son of Godzilla

fabricedesre commented 6 years ago

I liked Serval but it's already used by another cool project: http://www.servalproject.org/

Ah drat. That is a nice looking project.

Betelgeuse.

It sounds a little bit like B2G (in English).

Hi guys!

Sorry if I shouldn't be in this disscussion, but I love(d) B2G/FirefoxOS so I want to participate in this new(?) awesome project 😈

I want to propose an idea, as B2G was the codename of FirefoxOS based on Firefox/Gecko, I though that maybe we can use B2S (Boot2Servo) as codename and Photon as project name derivated from Quantum (you know, FirefoxQuantum/Servo relation), I don't know if you know the relation between the quantum and the photon, but I think is funny :')

And ... one question, is there some conversation thread or group about servonk? I want to participate and get involved.

Regards!

Hey @penserbjorne

I think you've got at least as much right to be in this discussion as I do! I don't think Fabrice ever invited me in, I just walked through the open door...

I didn't write it in the opening post, but @fabricedesre expressed two desires for the project name:

  1. Don't reference the platform or technology in the name
  2. Avoid any reference to Mozilla or related projects (dead or alive).

More specifically, Boot2Servo has already been used as a project name elsewhere (https://github.com/servo/servo/wiki/Mozlandia-B2S) and Photon is actually the name of the new Firefox UI (https://design.firefox.com/).

And: I don't know, what is the relationship between the quantum and the photon? (ready on drums!)

Cheers :)

Hi @penserbjorne , great to have you here! @madb1lly said it all about the naming.

We are chatting in the "B2G OS" telegram group, but you need an invite link to join (long story...). Or you can connect to the #b2g irc channel on irc.mozilla.org (you can join from https://mibbit.com/ for instance) which is mirrored with the telegram group.

Hi guys! Thanks for your replies.

Ok haha I didn't know about that two (very important) points, so, I'll be thinking about a name haha Maybe if we/you put a little of context for the project it would be easy to think a name :D like the name of some distro (animals), or Firefox-based projects (cats), or Android version (candies), it could be something that @fabricedesre like it as a project leader(?) haha

I'll try to join on IRC, but if you like to send me the link from telegram it would be great, my user name in telegram is the same (@penserbjorne), I really like to contribute :') but I guess I need more context because as I see this is a project apart from Mozilla-Firefox-related-stuff haha and I don't want to mess up.

By now I'll be reading the little documentation here (README , docs, issues, etc) and I'll try to compile something and that stuff's.

fabricedesre commented 6 years ago

I don't have a theme preference for the name. Jus something that sounds right would be good! No need for it to be a recall of something technical either.

About the context, I'm not sure what to say... this is just a "let's see what we can do" project to rebuild a web based OS.

Ok, well, I'm fan of the Star Wars movies haha so taking this from Wikipedia "The Alliance to Restore the Republic; colloquially known as the Rebel Alliance, is an interstellar pro-democratic republic coalition of revolutionary factions and clandestine cell systems within the fictional universe of Star Wars."

We can be ARMOS or TARMOS, (The) Alliance to Restore the Mobile Operating Systems, colloquially known as the Rebel Alliance, is an interstellar pro-web hacker coalition of revolutionary factions and clandestine cell systems within the universe of the Web Browsers."

What do you think? :')
