genericize code base #2

Since the code base came from the lds tool GTE (https://www.lds.org/gte20/) there are some places where things are hard coded or lds specific. The code should be changed to be configurable and worked to be more generic.

created a branch call "genericize-code-base". I'm doing the work for this issue in it.
