Issue 2190 has been merged into this issue.
From the old forum: "Does Fritzing need a "mystery smd part" in the core library?
The most frequent use would be two or four pin devices of various size footprints. (The pins would be pads, not holes, on the pcb.) A user could choose number of pins and package (footprint).
I tried to use some of the other generic parts for this purpose:
The mystery part does not seem to have any SMD packages, only THT.
The generic IC does not allow only two pins (but does have some SMD packages.)
The generic resistor does not have an appropriate SMD package for my part
The generic pin header does not seem suitable
For example, a component in the "power inductor" family, series LPS4018 from Coilcraft, part number LPS4018-223MLB. That part has a 4.4 mm by 4.4 mm square footprint, with two rectangular solder lands, with a rectangular solder mask between the two solder lands. (Divide a square into thirds, roughly speaking.) (Note that other similar coils from other manufacturers have different solder lands that probably would work with generic mystery smd part lands.)
Mystery SMD parts might be useful for other parts, especially if you weren't concerned about whether the part was self centering when soldered. For another example, one might be useful for a double pole mechanical switch input part (having four solder pads)?
Whether Fritzing code abstracts the mystery part to include SMD parts might be a separate issue from whether a "mystery SMD part" is presented to the user.
I probably will attempt to define a custom part for my use.
Author: 8: Interesting idea--I will add it to the issue tracker. If you are working in PCB view and the number of pins is small you could use Pad parts."
Seems relevant, remove imprted label. I would extend the mystery part instead of creating a new part.
