Today it became possible to request custom downloads for max 3500, not max 1000 taxa. The species lookup tool can therefore be extended (for the IUCN groups, certain community ecology users and other audiences not using R) so you custom list is not only matched to the backbone name, but also triggers a generation of the occurrence download with user provided and GBIF names for each. Before the download is generated, a user needs to have a chance to review and adjust the name mapping. I think this is a feature which is very attractive for the beginner users, GBIF training etc.

@timrobertson100 @jhnwllr I could not find an existing issue with this idea, so I created a new, but perhaps I don't know how to search for those (other than across all GBIF repositories)
