I think this issue is resolved and this ticket can be closed.

ManonGros commented 6 months ago

Thanks @albenson-usgs it looks like it is resolved for some of the occurrences mentioned but not for the ones from another Symbiotic portal where the images are hosted by iDigBio:

@neilcobb I'm the GBIF-US node manager, just cleaning up some of these tickets. I'm not sure if you're the best contact, of if I should contact the POCs for the individual datasets. It looks like there are some broken image links for images associated with the above occurrences (including the first mention at the top). Could you please take a look when you have a moment?

neilcobb commented 4 months ago

I do not know what records you are referring to.

@neilcobb sorry, if it wasn't obvious. I tagged you in github so you could look at the ticket history (at the bottom of the email you can see the link 'view it in github' that will give you a sense of the records I am referring to). I reached out to you as the POC for Symbiota Collections of Arthropods Network (SCAN), the installation through which these data are shared to GBIF. The two datasets that we have found with broken links include:

  1. Denver Museum of Nature & Science - Entomology
  2. A.J. Cook Arthropod Research Collection

Since the publishers appear to be independent of each other, I assumed the problem is upstream of them. If you're not the correct person to ask for help, is there someone else you could point me to?

neilcobb commented 4 months ago

Both of these collections should be serving data from Ecdysis. I am copying Paula, Anthony and Katie.

Happy to help the move.

The DMNS ARACHNOLOGY data is being pushed out to GBIF. However, Frank Krell, curator of the DMNS ENTOMOLOGY data made the decision to move his data to ARCTOS database instead of Ecdysis. that likely explains the broken link from the DMNS Entomology collection to GBIF. I am looping in our collections staff for this Entomology collection so they are aware of this issue.

The entomology data has not been uploaded into Arctos and likely will not be for awhile.

It’s going to take some work, so probably not until the fall at the earliest. It would be great if we can keep the GBIF connection active until then.

Hi all,

Yes, Ecdysis can take live-managed collections, and we can help with the migration from SCAN.

Best, ~Katie

However, Frank Krell, curator of the DMNS ENTOMOLOGY data made the decision to move his data to ARCTOS database instead of Ecdysis. that likely explains the broken link from the DMNS Entomology collection to GBIF. I am looping in our collections staff for this Entomology collection so they are aware of this issue.

The entomology data has not been uploaded into Arctos and likely will not be for awhile.

@neilcobb thanks for making the quick connections! @themerekat thanks for helping out with this too! I'll keep this open in case further documentation is needed, but no rush on getting it done. I'm glad to know it was relatively simple to identify the problem.

themerekat commented 4 months ago

Hi all, the issue here is not with SCAN or Ecdysis, but rather with some images that are/were supposedly stored on iDigBio servers. See how the URLs start with "https://api.idigbio.org/v2/media/". I'm not sure where these images went, but they are apparently no longer served through this same API. We might need to investigate how many links are broken and either ask iDigBio to look for them, or replace them with new copies via some other image hosting system.

I am copying Cat, I doubt iDigBio still has the images, every collection has been reminded repeatedly to always keep backups. Hawaii was the only collection I knew that lost their images , but they said they had them and then their collection manager died and I have not heard anything since.
