GO:0007600 sensory perception GOSLIM/taxon flag #767

Closed gocentral closed 9 years ago

gocentral commented 14 years ago

The series of events required for an organism to receive a sensory stimulus, convert it to a molecular signal, and recognize and characterize the signal. This is a neurological process.

is a child of cognition

The operation of the mind by which an organism becomes aware of objects of thought or perception; it includes the mental activities associated with thinking, learning, and memory.

but seems to be broader?

Jane this might already be on your list?

Hi David,

Didn't we agree years ago that sensory perception does entail higher-order neural processing, which would make the current arrangement correct? The def wording could perhaps be more explicit.

Yes, perception does require higher order neural functions. It is the basis of what it means to perceive something. It is narrower than cognition because cognition also includes thing like learning, thinking etc. It is possible to perceive something, but never learn about it. Visual agnosia is an example of a disease in which perception is effected. These patients can see fine, but they cannot perceive what they see.

Ok I think there was a problem with our perception of cognition. I also see that the terms are clearly defined as being nervous system processes.

Could we assign this for Jen to add a taxon flag (I notice ther are some rogue IEA mappings to plant) o With InterPro:IPR013515 o With InterPro:IPR013516 o With InterPro:IPR013654 o With InterPro:IPR016132

TAIR:AnalysisReference:501730468

so could this be switched to the annotation tracker and assignemd to Interpro afterwards

Thanks

Val

Hi,

I have added a link for the parent term as follows:

[Term] id: GO:0050877 name: neurological system process relationship: only_in_taxon NCBITaxon:33208 ! Metazoa

Does that seem any good? I will ask Chris to rerun the script to see if I have forgotten a load of very thoughtful non-animals.

I agree, I have remove 'cognition' some time ago. GO:0007600 - is no longer in InterPro2GO and both terms have been added to our exclusion list.
