@leonro : this is a preliminary rebase of the changes USGS has made, but needs to be tested. You mentioned you have a testing script, and it would be useful to verify these changes do not break any existing functionality.

Dear Heather, Jeremey, I included all aspects from your pull request into the new 0.9.x version of magpy. As I used "cherrypicking" full tracking of all changes and how I included that can be found in the commits, which refer to the specific suggestion. Actually most suggestions were incorporated as given. Only for webservice and baseline treatment, I changed the approach by not using observatory specific buttons, but by including a dictionary and a selection dropdown. The statistics view is incorporated at the bottom of the main panel.
