Definitely it makes no sense to have the minimum separation be greater than the number of $z$ slices (which we can get from ZARRs), but we can and probably should even be stricter, perhaps warning if the threshold's greater than 1/3 of the $z$ depth, and throwing an error if it's more than 2/3 or 3/4.
