Consider new design by chawsum #52

Chawsum at DeviantArt made some mockups for xnoise's design
Take a look here: the more Muine-ish version
http://th00.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2010/208/a/5/Muinshee_2_0__by_chawsum.png
and the one closer to the current design
http://cdn.solidfiles.net/i/2d29.png
By the way, filterbars will be implemented for Elementary's Postler, so they
will not be difficult to implement here.
Yeah, don't you mind if we pull xnoise in for elementary OS?

I think the mockups look really nice!
I'll try muine soon, so I can see whether I like its usability concept, but
it's hard for me too imagine that opening a dialog whenever I want to add new
tracks is handy.
In the second mockup the two panes look very similar and the window needs a lot
of space (the new mediabrowser needs twice the space of the old one to be
functional). The content of the album view, although it might be hard to
implement in a way that doesn't strain the cpu too much, looks very nice. I
wonder how the Artist view would look like.
Artist-Album-Songs or only Artist-Songs? The former needs a lot of space I
guess.
Can the user reorder or resize the columns in the tracklist (I also find the
treeview header annoying)?
Are filterbars a full-featured version of the current searchbar?
It would also be interesting whether there is a way to somehow use the
statusbar in a sensible manner.
I wonder whether the ui concept is able to cope with different media sources,
e.g. is there a way to listen to audio CDs or display youtube video searches in
the mediabrowser.

Well, ask chawsum on #elementary @ freenode for his vision, I just posted the
mockups

Another thing I can't see in the mockups is how to switch between modes like
"repeat all", "repeat single" etc.
Imo it would be great to see xnoise in elementary OS :)
Jörn is the grand master of xnoise, though, and he decides what happens to the
gui :)

Hello k0009000

Nice design mockups!!
I like the versions from http://cdn.solidfiles.net/i/2d29.png the most.

The idea from the *second* picture is very nice: The current track information
in the top of the tracklist area. Good! This will require the removal of the
tracklist headers and replace or current automatic column sizing with something
else.

The thin progressbar is looking good with time info next to it, although this
solution needs more space than the current.
I wonder why a status bar would be needed? This is a waste of space and we got
rid of ours long time ago.
Is there a special reason, why the media browser had to go to the right? I'd
prefer keeping it on the left side as countless other programms present their
data in a similar way and this will make it easier for the user.

The different possibilities to order the tracks in the media browser make
sense, even if I'm not sure if this is the best solution. I think good GUI
design for this player is really complex because we also have even more levels
of integration: e.g. What will happen with sources like external mp3 players?
How should these be ordered/presented?

I really appreciate your effort to imrpove the GUI of xnoise!
I think some more discussions will be necessary before we start putting things
into xnoise.

Regards and thanks
Jörn

PS.: What is Elementary's Postler?

Well these are not mine, chawsum's the guy behind it really =)
And most difference is about the library pane, and it can be made dockable
(both like one mockup - docked and another - undocked). It can be done in some
lines of code really (at least with Mono)
And yeah, the statusbar is there just cause it gives some border to the window
=)
Oh, all the discussion is at #elementary, so join in
