Turn on Wiki for this repository??? #128

Open roymcd opened 8 years ago

roymcd commented 8 years ago

I'm new to github, so apologies if this isn't the right place for this, but given the interest in the SageTV forums for a SageTV Open Source Wiki, would the owner (Narflex?) consider turning on the Wiki for this repository. There is a lot of info scattered around the SageTV forums but a Wiki seems like the best place to consolidate the Open Source specific info, including build doco, as well as general info about this new SageTV phase... a single source for well-organised information.

This came up before, but we didn't do it because this already exists: http://sagetv.wikia.com/

Not that it's really getting updated that much though....

Thanks Jeffrey. I wasn't aware of that site, but looking at it now it reinforces to me the need for a one-stop-shop for the source code and the wiki. The idea of a single location for all things SageTV OS related. It can refer back to the forums etc, but it would be THE place to go for all the open source stuff.

The wikia site looks like its got some really good stuff, but :-)

You make very good points. :) I have no problem turning on the Wiki for GitHub, and it would be good to have one that focused more on the code/architecture rather than also just end user stuff as well.

I'm more than willing to spend time writing content for it as I know the most about the code/architecture, and I think this information would be very useful to others who want to dive into the code more. What's been missing is a good place to put that information; and then also someone who can organize/maintain it all. I don't really have the time to commit to organizing/maintaining it...but if you're up for doing that, I can start feeding you more detailed content about how SageTV works and you can also start pulling any other relevant data you find from the forums and the other wiki into it. And of course I'd first turn on the wiki as part of that. :)

I haven't maintained a wiki before but I'm prepared to give it a try:-)
Thanks for considering this. I'm hopeful that it will provide a more consolidated focus for the open source phase of SageTV. Cheers

OK, I turned on the Wiki. :)

Thanks. I've had a stab at the first page. I'm ready for any content you've got and I'll start working on expanding the content too.

So regarding the wikia page, it is Ann unorganized messes because it was originally created for a very specific audience (uk dvb users I believe) by someone who is no longer around. I was able to arrest control of the abandoned page, because i feel it really ferries have the best location and name, but like Jeff, am unable too spend the time to truly reorganize it.

Thanks for the update. I didn't mean to be too critical of the wikia site, I was more trying to argue for a new repository to consolidate information. Having said that, I can already appreciate how difficult and time consuming it can be be bring information together from the small effort I've made so far and how tempting it is to just link to existing info scattered around the net. Made more difficult by me getting close to the point of giving up on sagetv out of frustration trying to fix tuning issues (now hopefully resolved - at least in v7 - wanted to sorted that out before seriously jumping to v9). There is good info on the wikia pages. I can't just plagiarise the content of that site, but if you're the administrator then maybe we can work to move some of the content here???

I'm not a Java guy so much, but I'm happy to try and apply some of my limited time to help the wiki. If there are no objections, I would start by pushing a copy of some of the dev/build docs into the wiki. Let me know if there are other desires, priorities or requests.

edit: which I see is already somewhat in there... so let me know what would help and I'll try to spend some time on that.

Thanks for the offer. As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier when it comes to consolidating information. That's in tune with the idea of a wiki anyway. If someone doesn't like it, they can always change/fix it.
