unfortunately I am unable to reproduce your error.
When I test-app your code I get:
| Error Error executing script TestApp: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Not a file or directory: /Users/hauner/Development/Grails/Books-master/test/cucumber (Use --stacktrace to see the full trace) which makes sense, because the dir does not exist. Creating it I get another error:
| Error Error executing script TestApp: cucumber.runtime.CucumberException: No features found at [test/cucumber] (NOTE: Stack trace has been filtered. Use --verbose to see entire trace.)which does make sense as well...
Does the stacktrace list anything plugin related? Does it contain grails.plugin.cucumber.CucumberTestType?

I ran into an issue with running 'grails test-app' to validate the cucumber and geb plugin install
