As soon as there is only one search result left, make that menu item visibly active, so that all one has to do is press Enter

No! there will be a problem, this will take away the user's confirmation reaction time, will skip to confirm whether the search result is what they want, such as whether the software is what he wants, which folder the file is in, etc. Questions will arise.
