Ask them about motor/gearbox/encoder package

Tell them that we want a position and speed controller that is light and see if they have any ideas

From Greg:

Here's the email response from MaxonMotors, they gave us a great deal because we're at a University and seems to have found a nice package for us (Motor+Encoder+Gearbox+ 2 recommended motor controllers) :

Thank you for interest in maxon and request for quote. When we talk about maxon DC motors we tend to think of our brush motors as opposed to brushless. If you would like to see a possibility with brushless (our EC lines) please let me know.

Below are price and lead time for the assembly #318327 (made up of #226806 RE-max 29 + #144034 GP26C + #225805 MR Encoder). This assembly will give you 3 RPS (180 RPM) when seeing 0.5 Nm continuous torque on output shaft of gear and with 16.36 VDC applied to motor. I have also picked out two of our position controllers for you to take a look at, one being a module (lighter weight) than the other. Data sheets for components are attached for your review (including weights for each component).

Since this is a university project, we would like to extend the 50 piece price for an order of 6 pieces. Please do let us know if you have any questions or would like to place an order.

318327 (made up of #226806 RE-max 29 + #144034 GP26C + #225805 MR Encoder):

5-19 pieces $486.55 each 50 - 149 pieces $354.30 each Estimated lead time (based on current inventory) to ship from Fall River, MA for 6 pieces is 2-3 weeks ARO.

360665 EPOS Module 36/2 (needs “motherboard” hardware designed set up to plug into):

5-19 pieces $290.40 each 50 - 149 pieces $232.00 each Estimated lead time (based on current inventory) to ship from Fall River, MA for 6 pieces is 2-3 weeks ARO.

378308 EPOS2 P 24/5:

5-19 pieces $710.30 each 50 - 149 pieces $552.35 each Estimated lead time (based on current inventory) to ship from Fall River, MA for 6 pieces is 2-3 weeks ARO.

We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express for these types of orders.

Quote is valid for 30 days from date sent. Delivery information is based on current inventory and is subject to change at any time. Due to the manufacturing process, orders may ship above or below by 10%. Prices do not include shipping and are based on quantity ordered at the time of order being placed and shipment from Fall River, MA to areas in the U.S. and Mexico. All shipments are FOB Shipping Point without transit insurance. If you do not have transit insurance and would like it, please request it upon ordering.. Maxon terms and conditions apply for all sales and are available upon your request.

Greg's going to ask them about using the controller w/ an Arduino and about the possibility of getting just one motor stack for the 50 unit price so we can experiment with it before buying all six.

I just put all the information about the Maxon products that we are planning to buy into the following two pages. Since this is the majority of our entire year's budget, I think every person on the team needs to carefully review these pages and make sure there are no problems at all. Comment here on what you think.

Motors Stacks Motor Controllers

As soon as everyone does this, we are ready to buy one of everything from Maxon.

I approve these parts. I think we have good, conservative estimates for the strength of the motors. I find it hard to believe the leg will have to spin much faster than 3rps, as well. 0.7deg resolution on the encoder sounds pretty good to me.

We're now looking at buying two motor stacks for initial testing, and four more if we like them. Unfortunately, the assembly+delivery takes 4-6 weeks and there is no refund if we sized the motors incorrectly, so we need to be extra careful. Total price of purchase would be $1341.80.

Hi Hayk, The pricing provided to you does not include shipping charges. Taxes are not applicable.

We do not have a 2 week window for returns (this applies only to orders placed directly online via our e-shop). Orders placed through my office have a different return policy. Maxon will take back the unit for repair / evaluation if you believe the unit is faulty. It cannot be returned if you decide it is not needed or not what you want.

2x pc 226806+144034+225805: $354.30 ea $708.60 2x pc 390438: $290.90 ea $581.80 2x pc 303807: $18.20 ea $36.40
UPS Ground Shipping / ESTIMATE $15.00 TOTAL $1341.80

Thanks & Best Regards,

Yeah I don't think we would be able to buy that right now because we don't know how much money we're getting.

I think we should just go for it. We'll get the funding we need and we need to order sooner than later. I feel like the control side of things is pretty limited until we have the actual electronics for Hayk and Chris to play with.

I talked to Martinelli and Jo Ann. It turns out that only one person has to sign the form (usually the advisor), not all three. Also, Jo said we're good to make purchases ~500$ or less without the form, just forward her the receipt. Also, put all purchases in the purchases page so we keep track of how much we've spent.

We're gonna get envelopes in our mailboxes about funding sometime today apparently.

I'm gonna tell Maxon we're closing the deal.
