I investigated it further and it seems like the Raspberry isnt froozen. It is the WiFi connections which becomes unavailable and stays so until a reboot.
Same problem. Critical errors.

I have also experienced the WiFi lock up which appears to be a bug in the Raspberry Pi WiFi driver. The bug is primarily triggered by Android devices. The issue is tracked here: https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/1342
The critical errors are unrelated to your WiFi issue.
@mill1000 Thanks for pointing that out. Using the new firmware fixed the issue as explained here.

I followed the instructions here to build
gmrender-resurrect
for a Raspberry Pi 3 with the latest raspbian.gmediarender
starts with error code(gmediarender:1109): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_pad_new_from_template: assertion 'GST_IS_PAD_TEMPLATE (templ)' failed
and after initializing a transfer with DroidUPNP the Raspberry Pi 3 freezes and has to be forcefully rebooted.
