While my main concern remains that they are just not part of the transport system, FWIW, there may be another motivation to not discuss, or even mention, DKIM in an Internet Standard version of SMTP. We expect this version be very long-lived. The 40 year history of SMTP makes that expectation plausible, much more plausible than it would be if we were documenting an idea that was implemented but for which there were not years of experience and, over those years, many, many, independent implementations and deployments. By contrast, we see draft-gondwana-dkim2-motivation. If its authors are not completely deluded about this issues, we should probably see the present incarnation of DKIM as relatively unstable, Internet Standard status of RFC 6376 or not.
In addition to the discussion of STARTTLS and related tools covered in Ticket #109, the Last Call comments also included strong advice that we mention and discuss DKIM, SPF, etc.
