Various edits and comments in this diff. Suggested review procedures:

Check the individual textual changes and if they’re not acceptable, note that in the review.
For places flagged in XXX, the authors can offer updated wording to address the comment.
Some of the XXX are larger issues which will also have GitHub issues created to track them. Those can either be fixed as part of this pull request or otherwise addressed after the editorial round is complete.

I suggest working on this diff primarily to pull in the editorial comments and to discuss the issues. Once those are in agreement, we’ll merge back to main and address the remaining issues iteratively.
