Had a play with a new containerised environment (https://github.com/surevine/openfire-docker-compose/tree/clamav/clamav)

Here, the HTTPFileUpload is configured to use ClamAV on "another machine".

Using the JSXC plugin for testing:

I could send some openfire logs, but couldn't send the eicar test virus
When I misconfigured the host for ClamAV (mimicking offline) all file uploads were rejected
When ClamAV is online, the delay caused by scanning isn't perceptable (although, of course, YMMV, etc)
