I can't figure out a way to add my own skins to the appliers hud without manually editing it.

Is that intentional?

Ahmmm, you can drag and drop a skin Head|Upper|Lower in that order to any slot. Wear the HUD, open your inventory then drag and drop an image into their appropriate slot.
