Addresses the max recursion limit problem #51

As described by @ChrisIck in #48 , the version in main breaks due to problems with recursion. This PR adressess those problems.

@ChrisIck @sivannavis @beasteers @adrianSRoman please review and let's merge this. It's a critical issue that is now resolved with these changes.

Alright all, I think this will do for now. I'll let this sit for the next few hours, but I'll merge before midnight EDT.
