I have found some already running threads about this problem. Out of that what I read on the discussion threads there should be some event mechanism already implemented. Can you take a look and see if there is something similar? If this happens to work it will also be a workaround (another one!) but an acceptable one.

Ideally there should be an event that allows us to hook at the link click, execute some action and cancel loading of the page associated with the link. Actually in our case, there will not be a page associated with the link at all.
