ya I get the same issue on my Big Sur install (intel old Mac) videotoolbox hardware decode works, however this was not an issue on Big Sur 11.7.0, 3-4 updates later black screen issue.

also the original chiaki from https://sr.ht/~thestr4ng3r/chiaki/ repo still works without hardware decode any idea why your's requires hardware decode now?

I dont like using hardware decode as its the most unstable for me, the video tends to fragment a lot..
