In PR #1226, the author managed to, albeit very basic, render .ass subtitles on the old video player, which we are now replacing for the global Roku video player.
I'm not too familiar with the structure of the new video player, and I'd love to make a PR myself for this, but it's definitely beyond my ability.
Burning in subtitles really reduces the quality of the video due to transcoding, so if the goal is direct play as much as possible, then a custom subtitle renderer is a must.
