I like this idea quite a lot, or it could be a final fantasy type thing where
one must buy an item to camp like a sleeping bag or tent...
Or it could only restore a certain amount of health.

Sure, also a good idea for spells.
- Sleeping bag: allows you to sleep in the wilderness, high chance of getting
attacked in your sleep (free round of attack for monster(s))
- Tent: same as sleeping bag, but lower chance of getting attacked. You have a
chance to wake up before the surprise round.
- Camp equipment: a tent surrounded by alarm wire (wire + bells) so that you
wake up (100%) so that there is no surprise round.
- Safe camp: as camp equipment, enhanced with barbed wire and some ultrasonic
buzzing stuff ;) that drives off most animals and vermin*, maybe even orcs, but
not undead or the like.
Spells:
- Retire: a somewhat alert sleep (similar to tent)
- Alarm: same as camp equipment
- Leomund's Secure Shelter**: a completely safe camp (even undead are kept at
bay)
* - creatures don't approach to direct vicinity (surrounding 8 fields) to
character
** - this name is probably copyrighted

..to add on to the spells comment, we could also incorporate a "safe passage"
spell that would allow a character to move through the wilderness (not caves or
dungeons) without being attacked for a certain period of time or number of
steps, etc. Perhaps a camping spell would really just be a "safe passage" for
the area you are standing on for enough time to sleep.
I don't know about "ultrasonic buzzing stuff", though... unless we plan on
going the route of Phantasy Star and mix old world and new world weapons/tech.

Why not just buy some potions to get some health?

Resting resets all the monsters, it would be nice to not have to go all the way
back to a town.

Thanks for the ideas. However, I'm not too sure about the realism in allowing
the player to camp in, let's say a dungeon. Outside could be argued, but that
is usually always close to a town where you can rest.
I really want to encourage players to bring enough healing when entering a
dungeon, and plan the exit from the dungeon as well. This, in my view, makes
the gameplay more interesting. Maybe it's a matter of taste. When all maps are
done, there will usually be a resting place nearby, except in the dungeons.

Additionally, good idea about the "safe passage". This is something that is
planned as a skill, so you will be able to sneak by monsters without them
attacking you. More on that in a later update.

Sounds fascinating :)

even after viewing the comment by Oscar above,
I would like to revisit this subject.
There is nothing like making your way back to town and being ambushed by a
wasp, dying, and losing 492 experience. At level 6, this was really really
annoying.
I am reminded of countless DnD campaigns where I and several other intrepid
adventurers were forced to hole up in some corner of a dungeon, door barred and
watches in rotation while clerics prayed and mages studied. This was normal,
sometimes for weeks, we would see no daylight.
As I search Andor's Trail, I see several great 'camp' locations. It seems so
natural, to take a tent, and stay out in the wilderness, returning to town when
I have stuff to sell, or Im out of rations and my tent is destroyed. I also
wonder why I cant rest in empty buildings.
I would propose the following items:
Sleeping Bag/Bedroll - lightweight, cheap, allows rest, 50% chance of Ambush!
Tent - medium weight, average cost 25% chance of Ambush!
Pavillion - rather heavy, expensive 10% chance of Ambush!
Ambush!
you are attacked by 1-3 creatures (sleeping in corners good) of the local area
who all get attacks of opportunity and your camp item is destroyed. You are
only healed halfway when Ambushed.
All camp items restore HP to full and reset creaure spawns for 'the day' camp
should last '12 hours' if day night cycle is used.

*Further Camp Ideas.
Now this is a bit left field, but what if the Tent/Pavillion was a Temporary
thing, and you could get permanent thing called a Cabin that was really
expensive. Like, tents are basically a 2 tile bed you can rest in you can move,
the pavillion a nicer one right. A cabin could be thing you place on the map
itself, that stays there. Maybe like 3x6 or something, you can go inside, it
has a bed, a storage chest, maybe a 'worktable' if you use them. Whatever. make
them like, 25000 gold. They get made out of whatever tileset you are on, so in
a cave, its a stone hut or whatever, in a dungeon, your private crypt. It could
be bigger on the inside than the outside and be rather small.
A pavillion could be a portable one, that is subject to attack. Going out to a
field of really tough monsters, setting up camp, putting all my extra healing
items and food in my chest, killing all the critters, taking found items to the
chest. Untill Im out of food and I am injured enough to pack up and go to town,
sell what I got and buy more stuff for the next trip. Tent is just a place to
sleep, no chest, but should about double the time you can travel and hunt or
such. Maybe you got in a bad scrape and had a hard time getting out of a
dungeon, to be faced with 3 screens of stuff between you and town.
A Wyvern Wing or teleport will get you home, but a tent or camp of some kind,
will let collect stuff on the way back, without worrying about losing all your
kit.

I don't like camping but I do like the idea of being able to rest in a very
very select areas like abandoned houses or camps so that there can be longer
journeys between villages and towns and such. Places like a witches hut in a
swamp and such.

I don't think resting "anywhere" would fit well into the type of gameplay that
we have in mind for Andor's Trail. But resting in the predetermined places like
tows and abandoned huts are something that I think we should consider.
We will take this into account when making new maps, to supply more places
where the player can rest. Meanwhile, I'm closing this issue since camping will
not be implemented.
Thanks for the report though and a good discussion!
