This PR does the following:
For upgrade, I mostly followed: https://gist.github.com/chrismccord/71ab10d433c98b714b75c886eff17357 though it was lacking in some places (brunch mostly)
Can you please double check everything still works as intended? When I used it for demo, msg tracing was broken (arrows not showing up). I'm thinking about separate PR with extra test coverage / refactorings, thoughts?
