Why write ID3 v2.4 only? #153

I'm quoting id3.org regarding ID3 v2.4:

"A follow on version, 2.4, is documented on this website but has not achieved
popular status due to some disagreements on some of the revisions and the
tremendous inertia present in the software and hardware marketplace."

They aren't my words.

Because the main user and motivation for mutagen, Quod Libet needs v2.4. Also
note that the text you quote was written in 2006.

It doesn't matter, Christoph. The support for 2.4 is still very spotty.

From Wikipedia's page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ID3:

"Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player cannot handle ID3v2.4 tags in any
version, up to and including Windows 8 / Windows Media Player 12. Windows can
understand ID3v2 up to and including version 2.3."

A good reason to support the writing of 2.3 tags as well. Now I'm using Debian,
but most people in the world use Windows.

Sadly, yes. This is also stated in issue 85. To make it clear, I have nothing
against supporting v2.3.

Supporting v2.3 would be a requirement to make Mutagen a true "all-in-one"
solution for editing of metadata. But I suppose this is not the primary goal.
Thanks for the response anyway, Christopher.
