• benefit for humanity at whole
• looks good on resume
• open-source entices people to trust and try, building community
• but open-source means people won't pay if they could just download it.
• would encourage a support-based business model. ST3 is a better approach I think.
• although Joyent have done it with Node (but node is a platform)
