I'm having the same issue, with the same reproduction steps. I'm using a Gigabyte Aero 15. Mint runs fine with both the default and "software" options for the display server, but when using the Wayland option, the system freezes as soon as the external monitor connects.
The external monitor is typically connected via a usb-c to DVI port. I haven't had the chance to try it with an HDMI connection.
I've included the system info, in case it helps.

Steps to reproduce

Expected behavior
It should work with external monitor connected and do not freeze the system.
