In the current implementation no given namespace is interpreted as forcing a flat structure without hierarchy.
However, there should be three choices:
Pass a namespace table: force items to be in it.
Pass an empty table (special case): force flat structure
Pass no namespace: infer the namespace.
The last option would allow assign_formatter to create the namespace along the way. However, there's one thing to be considered: it may be difficult to discern entries from namespace nodes.
