Describe your desired feature here :
I'd like to be able to define patterns (text snippets or regex?), so that they 
would be highlighted in the reading list.

Sure, use 'Filter' feature :)

I want highlighting, not filtering.

OK, I can use filter to some extent.
How about different coloring for different highlights?

no multiple colours allowed, just one , sorry !
It will be complex to manage queries around multiples colors.
