I am in Australia right now, too. Using Vodafone I had to set up the APN
manually. Then it worked. Give it a try.

Issue 17 has been merged into this issue.

First of all make sure your APN is correctly set. If it still doesn't work,
it's an issue related to SIM status reporting.

Unfortunately I currently don't have time to work on CM; this one's high up on
the list though..

Had the same problem; configured my APN settings and it all worked fine.

In my case, I'm unable to configure the APN settings. Once I go to
Settings>Mobile Networks, I'm not able to change the APN settings.

It also gives me an error once I hit the 'Search Networks' button.
