placeOrder mutation throws error on braintree_applepay payment method

Preconditions and environment

• Adobe Commerce ver. 2.4.6-p3
• Identified this issue through GraphQL/PWA. Not sure about fullstack.

placeOrder mutation doesn't work for braintree_applepay payment method. It throws the following error

"Unable to place order: Your payment could not be taken. Please try again or use a different payment method. Cannot determine payment method."

Steps to reproduce

1. Enable Apple Pay through Braintree from Stores > Configuration > Sales > Payment Method
2. call placeOrder mutation for checkout.

Expected result

Order placed successfully

Actual result

Returns error with the following message

"Unable to place order: Your payment could not be taken. Please try again or use a different payment method. Cannot determine payment method."

Verified the issue on magento 2.4.6-p3 and the issue is reproducable.

We are getting ""Unable to place order: Your payment could not be taken. Please try again or use a different payment method. Cannot determine payment method." error on placeOrder mutaion on braintree_applepay payment method.
