This PR replaces/merges the other, separate PRs for above mentioned tickets.

Self-test runs clean against ML9. Merging to let CI check against ML8 and ML7..

Note that the comments on #833 apply to this PR too. I might need to revisit to make it run against ML8 (and 7)..
