Idea: service for greenframe.io - Let users carbon offset their measured Co2 usage #62

Since we are able to calculate the estimated Co2 emmissions on the stack, it could be a cool idea for a service that let's the users opt in to be charged the cost of the Co2 offset of their stack.

Then each month, said company gets an invoice stating X amount of Co2 is used by their stack and it has been offset for a cost of Y.

This could also be a part of the website embed telling visitors that the emissions are offset to good projects.

That would be a great idea... If CO2 offsets investments were really effective. I don't believe they are.

See e.g. Report: majority of carbon offset projects globally are “likely junk”

There is no way around it: we have to reduce our own emissions, we can't pay someone else to do it elsewhere.

I agree the main goal needs to be to reduce emmissions, not pay and forget/continue doing whatever pollutes. There will always be bad apples as you mention in your article.

However, I am convinced there are efficient ways to "offset" Co2. One example can be fixing destroyed/manupulated nature -- this costs money and therefore most cases, we don't. Having a fund or initiative fund this I believe is hard to argue be "junk".

Having this said, this is far out of my field and knowledge so this is purely subjective logical thoughts.

I do totally agree we have to reduce vs offset if that's possible. This was more a initiative to motivate users to cut down on said invoices at the same time having a good impact. (If there are any non junk orgs out there that is)

Thanks for taking your time answering and reading the issue though. 👋
