This is @yetist's patch from here: https://github.com/mate-desktop/mozo/pull/47#issuecomment-470355450, fixing an exception trying to add new menus and items.

Is this part ot https://github.com/mate-desktop/mozo/pull/47 or something separate? I have not been able to follow all of that

@lukefromdc this fixes a bug that was found during the discussions to #47 but which is otherwise entirely unrelated to that PR.
