probably display capture issue
the second set of examples at least , it looks like theres some sort of filter going on in desmume making the background look nicer , as for the first set yea its like rsduck said , an opengl display capture issue
I'm having the exact same issue, internal resolution is set to 16x but it's still low-res.

it looks like the same issue with melonds not being able to do dual screen 3d yet
Update : So with the released of 0.9.5, the issue still remain.
Basically i tested Ni No Kuni for both melonDS vs DeSmuME. On DeSmuME it look great in battle but not on overworld (character look distorted) While on melonDS it look great on overworld but look so bad in battle.
Both used upscaling. DeSmuME used GPU Scaling Factor x3, Texture Scaling x4. melonDS used 16x native (4096x3072).
Hoping to see it get fixed!
