Mentoring Request #30

Hello RMU!

My name is Brandon Liu, and my email is at brandon.k.liu@gmail.com.

I appreciate your time for a mentoring session!

Session Objectives

  1. If possible, a discussion on how to best spend my time progressing as a developer/programmer/computer scientist. I've been looking at a number of books lately to work through, and I'm not sure which one may be most appropriate: The Pragmatic Programmer, Skiena, SICP, CLRS, The Practice of Programming, GoF, etc. Or perhaps it would be better to spend time reading code? Or perhaps just building things?
  2. For a more concrete objective, we can discuss some of my PuzzleNode solutions, found here. If I had to choose two to look at, I'd pick 7-hawaii and 8-scrabble. I used to compete in the USA Computing Olympiad using C++, so I feel like my solutions are particularly procedural. I have skimmed over some other people's solutions, and I've found that my solutions tend to be more terse at the cost of readability and avoid creating new Objects. So let's talk about making my code more Ruby-idiomatic and improving it all around.

Available Times I'm traveling around a bit until August 29th. For now I can say that I'll be available August 30th and beyond from 8pm-12am EDT (GMT -4). If that doesn't work well, I'll know my daytime schedule a lot better once school starts next week. Let me know if any of these times work!

Thanks so much for your time and consideration.

Hi Brandon, That evening time might be difficult for any of us. Possibly I could do 8pm, but earlier would be better. Could you send us your daytime schedule when you know it next week? Then we can decide what works best. Thanks for getting in touch! Eric

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the response! I'm back at school now and I have a better sense of my daytime schedule. My weekend schedule is pretty open right now. Would Saturday at 4pm EDT work for you?

Thanks, Brandon

Saturday not so good for me.. what about Sunday at 4pm (or another time - I'm pretty flexible)?

branliu0 commented 12 years ago

OK, Sunday at 3 is fine. We can meet in #rmu-study-hall-1 IRC channel on freenode. OK?

branliu0 commented 12 years ago

Sounds great. Thanks so much Eric!

Could we push it earlier by 30 minutes to 2:30pm? I have to be somewhere at 4:30pm and I want to make sure that we have a comfortable buffer of time!

ericgj commented 12 years ago

Sure, fine. Earlier is probably better for me too.

branliu0 commented 12 years ago

Perfect. Thanks!

Thanks Brandon, in case you need it the link for our code discussion is here. I'm afraid I didn't save the IRC discussion, but you can find it by date here. Good luck with things this semester, hope to see you around RbMU soon!

Also, if you like, you can give us some feedback on this survey, so we can improve our mentoring sessions.
