Unable to use Ctr + V to paste and Ctrl + S to save #175732

Type: Performance Issue

After installing VSCode on my Windows 10 laptop and installing a few extensions, I noticed I am unable to use the ctrl + S and Ctrl + V to perform save and paste functions respectively.

Kindly assist.

Please use the Start Extension Bisect command to investigate whether the problem is being caused by one of your many extensions.

I notice similar behavior sometimes, especially when I have a file open that's more than 300 lines... the shortcut keys get delayed, for as much as 30 seconds, but typing & mouse clicks don't. Whenever I hit a perf issue, I assume it's an electron thing, based on electron's reputation for being OKish/meh for things really small and limited in scope, and a house of cards if those limits are exceeded. This is far from VSCode's only "house of cards" issue, but it's the only one I run into often enough to be annoyed by it.

as I indicated, the correct commands are getting executed, just very much delayed... any time when I hit a command key and nothing happens, if I wait 20-45 seconds, the correct thing will happen... if I keep typing/working/whatevering, it will also happen after a similar delay... but in whatever context is current when the command finally triggers (e.g. if during the delay waiting for Ctrl+V I move the cursor, the text will paste at the new location... as if I put the Ctrl+V in the keyboard buffer after the delay instead of before)

restarting VSCode always resolves the issue, so that won't help... I think it's probably a memory management issue or possibly a thread management issue, either way I'd be shocked if it's in a plugin and not in Electron

@alexdima whenever VSCode slows down like the original poster described, restarting VSCode always resolves the issue until it randomly happens again (and by random I mean I've never noticed a pattern), so your method won't help... the only thing I could do is run with all extensions disabled for a couple days until it happens again, but it won't be a fun few days... the 4-5 Markdown extensions I run are the primary reason I don't edit my PKB in Obsidian (and they don't have snippets).

I don't know if it's related or not, but I'm seeing a behavior change since 1.80...

old behavior (1.79 & earlier): nothing happening for a couple seconds, then the paste happens wherever my cursor is

new behavior (since 1.80): a spinning wait circle shows up immediately, inline where the paste should happen... the wait is significantly longer than it used to be, I've seen up to 30 seconds to paste a single character from the clipboard... if I click anywhere else in VSCode while the wait circle is spinning it cancels the paste immediately, I can still interact with other windows without affecting the paste

gist of a large file that triggers this behavior pretty much any time it's open (148kB, 1750 lines of Markdown that's mostly HTML)
