Capturing pass-through signals #822

Can dvrescue (or vrecord in DV mode) be configured to capture a stream that is not coming off tape? I am trialling the digitisation of Hi8 tapes by playing s-video into my DVCAM deck, ie using it as a DV converter. (And how can I tag this issue as a question?)

Hmmm, I haven't tested that but I think it's possible. For preservation work, I'd recommend using a video capture card that could give you an uncompressed or lossless copy, but if you're okay with applying DV compression to the source tapes I think it would work. @libbyhopfauf have you tried this?

The hi8 is a home project and I am cool with DV as a preservation format for s-video :-) no $$ for a capture card!

I have not, but I can test it out. Since we're capturing preservation copies, I haven't thought to try it, but it might be an interesting test case for the Home Movie Day outreach we do :)

You may both be interested in an ongoing community archive project the org I work for led called "Rokirokitia". Digitisation specs were not strictly archival but designed to be appropriate for end use and storage space, eg digitising video to .mp4

Hey @tomackroyd @libbyhopfauf, any testing on this? Or if it works, should we somehow document this as a feature?

I haven't had a chance to test this yet, but will add try to work it in on Friday!

Will trial this when I get dvrescue to recognise my deck, but question in advance: clicking on the record button in the dvresce GUI will initiate capture once a file path is entered, but then how should the capture be halted? There's no tape or transport.

@tomackroyd you can end the capture by pressing stop on either your deck or the stop button below the player in the GUI. Here's the latest build, if you want to try it out and let us know how it goes!

@tomackroyd also, just to make sure I understand your question about the pass-through signals correctly for my own testing, do you mean you have a Hi8 player (playing a tape) that is connected via S-Video to a DV player/deck/camcorder that is then connected to your computer? I'm very curious to see if this would work!
