I think I'll go ahead with a solution based on viewport-units, which seems pretty well supported across browsers.

The dynamic adjustment of the grid height in this fix is only done on the main page (as reported in this entry).

Note: there are other places where a similar issue happens (mapping tool; resulting "search term" / "keyword" tables, etc). A similar approach as in this fix could be applied in those cases (however, the mapping tool seems a bit trickier because of the varying size of the sections above the grid..)
