Why not do it in the collection itself?

@kuiche I considered this, but this collection is used twice - for this, but also to register all the gateways. I know nothing actually relies on the gateways being sorted, the way I see it is that setting the sort within the collection itself is a behavioural change and therefore I don't really want to do it.
